PORT MORESBY, July 14 – Wednesday’s competition at the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games is relatively quiet in terms of number of gold medals, but the quality will still be there with four lawn bowls titles and nine athletics events to be decided.
Both men’s soccer semifinals are also scheduled for one of two venues in Port Moresby and the sports of golf and softball begin.
In lawn bowls, the men’s singles, men’s fours, women’s pairs and women’s triples gold medals will all be awarded at Bisini Greens.
On the athletics track at BSP Stadium, finals in the men’s and women’s 400m, men’s 1500m and women’s 10000m will be held.
Field event finals are men’s hammer throw and pole vault as well as the women’s discus.
It is also the first day of women’s heptathlon and sees the heat stages of men’s and women’s 200m sprints and all four hurdles races.
Men’s soccer semifinals feature Tahiti against Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia versus Fiji, who beat Vanuatu on Sunday night to qualify for Rio 2016 as Oceania’s Olympic representative.
The two-team, three-day softball tournament begins at Bisini Softball Diamond with American Samoa playing Papua New Guinea at 10:00. The teams are playing a three-games series to decide a winner.
Golf also tees off at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club at 08:30 with the first of four rounds and men’s and women’s individual and team titles up for grabs.
The BSP Stadium cluster also hosts more beach volleyball and hockey while netballers continue preliminary round play at PNG Power Dome.
Also continuing are volleyball at BSP Arena, men’s cricket at Bisini Grounds, and squash and tennis doubles at Steamships Racquet Club.
